Citizen Shrapnel & the Lords of Little Egypt
Citizen Shrapnel and the lords of Little Egypt is the song writing vehicle for singer Michael Shrapnel . The founding member of Hobart based gypsy cabaret romp Shemozzle (2000-2007) is a few years older, a shade more introspective, but as always, capable of transporting his audience to an otherworldly place, a place where the heart, mind and soul are cracked opened and explored.
Shrapnel is joined in this endeavour by old Shemozzle stable mates and long time friends Russell Dobie on double bass and Sean Brady on drums as well as the versatile David McNamara on piano. Together these three talented musicians weave a sinuous fabric of rhythm and melody to cradle Shrapnel ‘s eloquent, incisive and thought provoking lyrics. Whether on the large concert stage or in an intimate club venue, this performance that will leave you somewhere other than where you started – perhaps a little startled, relieved or strangely refreshed.
Shrapnel cites influences such as Jacque Brel, Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen , Nina Simone but he mimics none of these. His performance is direct, powerful, honest and always in service of the song, delivered with an open heart, an open mind and an open voice.
