Exclusive songwriting retreat for women
Keep One Eye on the Stranger is an exclusive songwriting and mentorship program, developed by Festival of Voices and supported by Music Tasmania, that nurtures emerging female talent.
Electronica/Doom Pop artist, Abbe May is one of Australia’s most respected and exciting songwriters and vocalists. Her live performances are charismatic, intense and provocative. The impressive multi-instrumentalist artist has an ever growing audience and catalogue of songs about love and lust that could almost be romantic if it weren’t for the vitriol.
Abbe spent her late teens and early twenties in Australia’s sleaziest rock venues, busted up studios and unreliable tour vans in various solo and band incarnations. With sly humour, Abbe graduated from her critically acclaimed early explorations of rock and blues to become a guitar-slinging, beat bouncing goddess with an atmospheric cocktail of sexy indie RnB, blues, voodoo and electronica.
Abbe is super excited to be involved in this initative: "I am really looking forward to working with Tassie’s new generation of female songwriters at this year's Festival of Voices! It is such an important undertaking. I feel lucky to be invited to assist in encouraging, showcasing and nurturing female talent and providing a platform for career growth. I know it will be an awesome experience to run the workshop retreat and spend time with Tasmania’s emerging female talent on Bruny Island"
With the support of Music Tasmania and APRA AMCOS, four female singer/songwriters from around the state will be selected to attend an all-expenses-paid retreat on Bruny Island that includes an incredible Pennicott Wilderness Journey!
Following the retreat, they will have an opportunity to showcase their songs at Voicebox, along with a captivating performance by Abby May and her Badass Choir as part of the Festival of Voices program.
If you're an emerging, female singer/songwriter based in Tasmania and would like to apply for this killer opportunity, simply complete the online form here.
The selected singer/songwriters will be determined by Abbe May.
Applications close Thursday 19 May 2016.
