George Begbie wins national songwriting award
Congratulations to George Begbie who recently received the highly regarded Rudy Brandsma award at the Australian Songwriter’s Association (ASA) songwriting competition. The ASA is a national, not-for-profit organisation that aims to promote, encourage and support musicians and songwriting in Australia.
The Rudy Brandsma award is named after the late co-founder of the ASA and is awarded to songwriters who have demonstrated excellence and diversity in songwriting. George has the honour of being the first Tasmanian in the competition’s history to receive this award: “It’s such an honour to receive these nominations and the award, but it hasn’t sunk in yet!”, said George, “It was a surreal feeling hearing your name called out on stage, I was so happy to be nominated for the award and honestly thought that would be that!”.
As part of receiving the award, George was asked to perform the winning song, “Closing Time”, in front of 400 guests, comprising of musicians, industry representatives, and the 2015 ASA Hall of Fame recipient, Johnny Young.
